 Abstract:  Charles Lewis Pfahl (1871-1956) was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, the son of American Civil War veteran Frederick Pfahl (d. 1933) and grandson of Civil War veteran Christian Pfahl (1822-1881) . Pfahl served in the United States Army during the Spanish American War, and was stationed in Manila, Philippines. The collection consists of twelve letters from Charles Lewis Pfahl to his brother Daniel Standard Pfahl between July of 1898 and December of 1899. The majority of the letters were sent from Manila, Philippines during the Spanish American War when Charles Lewis Pfahl was stationed as a member of the 6th Artillery, Battalion D.

 Abstract:  Maurice E. Van Metre (1895-1970) was a popular Cleveland, Ohio, journalist who served as theater and radio-television critic and gossip columnist for the Cleveland News and suburban Sun newspapers. During World War II, he published "The Dirt at the News", a monthly newsletter for Cleveland members of the armed forces, which included the whereabouts and experiences of Cleveland servicemen, especially 120 former News employees. The collection consists almost entirely of letters to Van Metre from friends and former co-workers who subscribed to The Dirt at the News. These letters represent a portion of those Van Metre compiled and edited into his entertaining miniature newspaper and include letters from many well-known persons, providing insights into the war-time experiences of servicemen at home, as well as the battlefront. Also included are some printed materials relating to Van Metre and his newsletter.
